I think most kids growing up in the Canadian public school system had the opportunity to take a shoe box photograph back in the day. And like many others, that thrill never really left me. But before any of that, I got to watch my Dad put together slide shows and choreograph them to pre-recorded music in the seventies. Two projectors were used to fade between shots, and a custom built machine he designed was used to run a show operator-free, using a pre-recorded run through on a stereo casette deck. New and old visitors alike can still be treated to these shows if you catch Dad in a tinkering mood... What will it be today? Hawaii? Paris? Mexico? Spain? There is no substitute for getting to observe such care for process up close. And at such a young age, five maybe? With that, a young lad can get an understanding of the skills and tools required for taking and making photographs with impact. Which back in the everything analog days, by todays standards, would seem utterly onerous.
Adopting my Dad's Minolta SRT-101 got me through Mr. Lorenz's Photography class in grade 9 and also turned me onto the darkroom. It wasn't long before during the week some nights I wouldn't emerge till after 8pm so much printing needed to be done for the year book.
